Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Birth & Postpartum Doula?

A Birth & Postpartum Doula is a trained, non-medical professional who provides emotional, physical, and informational support throughout pregnancy, labour, birth, and the postpartum period. My role is to help you feel informed, supported, and empowered while working alongside your existing healthcare team.

Do I still need a doula if I have a midwife or OB?

Yes. Your midwife or physician is responsible for your medical care, while your doula focuses on you. I provide continuous emotional and physical support, comfort measures, education, and reassurance before, during, and after birth.

Will you make medical decisions for me?

No. I do not provide medical care, diagnose conditions, or make decisions on your behalf. Instead, I help you understand your options, ask questions, and make informed decisions that align with your values and birth preferences.

Can my partner still be involved?

Absolutely. A doula doesn’t replace your partner—they support both of you. I help partners feel confident in their role while ensuring they also have space to rest, eat, and be fully present during the birth.

What does postpartum support look like?

Postpartum support is tailored to your family’s needs. This may include newborn care education, feeding support, emotional support, light household tasks, meal preparation, and giving you the opportunity to rest while someone cares for your baby.

What if my birth doesn’t go according to plan?

Birth is often unpredictable. Whether you have an unmedicated birth, an epidural, a planned or unplanned cesarean birth, or your plans change unexpectedly, my role is to provide calm, compassionate support throughout the experience.

When should I hire a birth doula?

You can hire a doula at any point during pregnancy, though many families begin looking during the second trimester. The earlier we begin working together, the more time we have to prepare for your birth and postpartum experience.

Do you support all types of births?

Yes. I support hospital births, home births, birth centre births, planned cesarean births, VBACs, induced labours, medicated and unmedicated births. Every birth deserves respectful, individualized support.

Do you offer postpartum support without birth support?

Absolutely. You don’t need to have me present at your birth to benefit from postpartum care. Whether you need support during the first few weeks or months after baby arrives, I’m happy to meet your family where you are.
