To ensure the highest level of care, I limit my end-of-life doula caseload to 3–4 clients at a time. If you are considering end-of-life support, I encourage you to book a free discovery call to get the conversation started. Connecting ahead of time increases the likelihood that I’ll be available to support you when you need it most.

Just as a Birth Doula supports people in transitioning INTO this world, a Death Doula supports people in transitioning OUT of it 🕊️

Here are some examples of what that support can look like at every stage of the journey:

💭 Exploration & Planning – Clarifying wishes, supporting emotional and spiritual preparation, and creating meaningful rituals.

🌿 Preparing for the Journey – Providing steady, grounded support as the end approaches.

🕯️ Active Dying Phase – Holding sacred space, offering comfort, and supporting loved ones.

🌌 After Death Care – Assisting with farewells, rituals, and practical matters.

💖 Grief & Integration – Holding space for remembrance, grief, and healing.

At Between Realms, this work is offered with presence, tenderness, and deep respect for the sacredness of this passage.

✨ Meet Maïa ✨

My path as a Death Doula began long before I received formal training. Losing my father at a young age and moving through my own journey with death and grief opened my heart to this work. Years later, I chose to deepen this calling through extensive study.

I’ve completed training in end-of-life care through Douglas College, the International End-of-Life Doula Association, and the Home Hospice Association, as well as hospice volunteer training with Nanaimo Community Hospice. My path has also led me to study with the Canadian Integrative Network for Death Education and Alternatives, the Centre for Sacred Deathcare, the Natural Death Care Centre, the BC Centre for Palliative Care, and the Willow End-of-Life Education program.

In addition, I’ve trained in Shamanic Reiki and Psilocybin Assisted Psychotherapy, continuing to weave ancient and modern approaches together. These practices allow me to support people in a holistic way — not only addressing the physical and practical aspects of dying, but also the emotional, spiritual, and energetic dimensions.

Alongside my private practice, I’ve dedicated over 200 volunteer hours to my local hospice sitting bedside with patients as they’ve taken their last breaths, offering Reiki to palliative clients and grieving families, and facilitating Advance Care Planning sessions and Death Cafés.

I bring both professional knowledge and personal understanding of what it means to lose someone you love — offering deep presence, compassion, and guidance to those navigating these transitions.

Last night under the Virgo new moon, we gathered in ceremony to welcome Virgo season 🌑✨

Christine @christinehudson_musictherapist guided us through a nourishing sound journey while I offered Reiki to each participant. We pulled oracle cards to support integration and each soul left with a sunflower 🌻 as a reminder to tend the garden within, pruning what is complete and planting new seeds of intention to bloom.

One year ago today, I completed my solo journey from Porto to Santiago — 284 km on foot, across coastal boardwalks, forest paths, cobblestone towns, and ancient pilgrim trails.

Every day was a ceremony. Every step, a prayer.

I walked to grieve. To listen. To find stillness within the movement.

I met nuns who pulled me into church. Strangers who felt like soulmates. I bathed my swollen feet in rivers and swam in forest waterfalls.

I didn’t walk to arrive. I walked to remember who I am.
This wasn’t just a pilgrimage. It was a soul reset.
A sacred return. A homecoming.🕯️

Fire teaches us the sacred art of alchemy — how to let go, transform, and return to essence. In death work, as in life, we are always in a process of transmutation: grief into love, endings into offerings, fear into reverence. This flame reminds me that nothing is ever truly lost, only changed. 🔥

Today is my dad’s birthday. He would have been 63 years old. Ever since he passed when I was a child, my family has known bumble bees to be his way of saying hello.

I don’t take animal encounters as signs unless they’re really trying to get my attention…

On this day a couple years ago, as I was driving to a hiking trail, a bumble bee landed on my arm and stayed glued to me for the rest of the hour-long car ride. Even with the window open, it never tried to fly away, it just rested on my arm in complete presence.

Both my then-partner and I found it odd that this bee was sticking around for so long until it dawned on me that it was June 12 - my dad’s birthday - and it was him coming to say hello 🐝

From the time that I was a young child to now well into adulthood, he has always been by my side.
